Fis-sena 2003 huwa nħatar Vici-Kappillan ta’ San Ġiljan fi żmien il-kappillan Fr Ray Toledo. Bħala viċi huwa kien ir-rettur tal-knisja l-antika magħrufa bħala ta’ Lapsi. Matul dan iż-żmien, flimkien ma grupp żghir imma attiv ħafna, nbeda xogħol kbir ta’restawr li għadu għaddej sal-lum.
Fil-21 ta’Lulju 2009 jiġi maħtur Kappillan tal-parroċċa ta’San Ġiljan. Bħala kappillan żagħżugħ, Fr Claude issa kellu jifrex il-ħidma tiegħu lil hinn mill-knisja ta’Lapsi. Bħala parroċċa mifruxa ħafna u ragħaj spiritwali tal-Ġiljaniżi, huwa għaddej b’ħidma ma tieqaf xejn fost il-komunita’Ġiljaniża – ħidma spiritwali u pastorali kif ukoll kulturali biex dak li ntwieret minn għand ta’ qabilna jibqa’jitgawda mill-ġenerazzjonijiet li għad iridu jitwieldu.
Fr. Claude Portelli was born on the 6 August 1975. He is from Sliema, and has three younger siblings. Fr. Claude received his education at St. Edwards College, and his tertiary education at the Archbishop’s Seminary and at the University of Malta. It was on the 28 July 2002 that he was ordained by Archbishop Joseph Mercieca. During his first year as a priest, Fr. Claude was sent to carry out pastoral work at the Parish of Saint Mary in Ħal-Għaxaq. He was then appointed Vice Parish Priest of St. Julians in 2003, when Fr. Ray Toledo was Parish Priest. Fr. Claude was appointed Rector of the former Parish Church, commonly known as Lapsi Church. Together with a small but dedicated group of volunteers, Fr. Claude began to work to restore the old church to its’ former glory – work which is still going on today.
Six years later, on the 21st July 2009, Fr. Claude took over from Fr. Ray Toledo as Parish Priest of St. Julians. As a young Parish Priest, Fr. Claude now had to dedicate more time to the whole parish, and less to Lapsi Church. As the Parish is quite widespread, and also includes Paceville – well-known for its’ night life – he is continually working to guide the parishoners. This guidance is spiritual, pastoral and also materialistic as he works to help the parishoners enjoy and also safeguard the spiritual and cultural heritage left to us by our ancestors.
